Two performances at the Banff Centre!

Last week I participated in two major performances at the Banff Centre! Terri Hron and Sam Davidson asked me to the contribute visuals to a performance of theirs that they had organized. They also invited a dozen other musicians to improvise live with them in front of a large audience at the Bentley Music Hall on February 10, 2009. I cut out hundreds of images from National Geographic magazines and made a collage live in response to the music. A video camera relayed the collage as I made it onto a giant video screen on the stage next to the musicians.

The next day, I hosted a performance of my own in the Other Gallery. Over a period of several weeks leading up to the performance, I collaborated with an incredible musician named Bryan Davies, who plays trumpet with the celebrated Vancouver band 'Brasstronaut'. We practiced improvising musical and visual compositions in response to each others' artwork. Together we performed live in front of an audience, along with a couple of last minute guests, Marc Nelson on drums and Sam Davidson on clarinet. Together they made some incredible music while I drew on a large sheet of black construction paper with chalk, and eventually cut and tore into the paper until it lay in tattered pieces on the gallery floor. Afterward we went outside and burned the paper in the fire pit, cooking hot dogs and marshmellows in the process.
